What is your advice for a creating a curated home?

Curating your own home is always interesting, because you need to be in love with everything that you buy. When you’re curating things for yourself, you can pull ideas from different time periods, styles, and vernaculars. The way you mix it all together is really what you are curating, and that keeps it interesting. I always take ideas from the past. For example, the house that we are in now was an art studio, so we wanted to keep that inspiration. There are elements to the art studio that are still in the house, so that dictated my design ideas. Whenever I am working with clients, I always make sure that they are really the ones picking out things that they love. I can always give them direction, but it has to be their space where they know that they love every single piece going into it.

An important thing to remember is that if you don’t love it, skip it. Move on to the next piece. I think that whenever people are going through this process, they find that they really love what tells their story.

How do you incorporate the geographic location of a home and the owners’ personal style when designing the home’s interiors?

Every house is site specific. Whether you want it to be or not, you are in a location. If you’re in Southampton, you’re not building a ski lodge in Aspen. So, I think that you have to be realistic about where you are and what you are doing, because you don’t want to feel like you are stepping into a different time and place that does not belong. That is a huge part of curating the home—taking all of these factors into consideration and finding the best of what's out there.

HOW DO YOU INCORPORATE SFERRA PRODUCTS TO MAKE YOUR DESIGN VISION COME TO FRUITION?

Something I always talk to clients about in every aspect of the house, whether we are talking about furniture, fabrics, or textiles, or lighting, is the quality and the craftsmanship. That is such an important thing. I go to SFERRA for the elevated products—the highest-quality sheets and towels. SFERRA makes it very easy for designers, because there is such a wide array of table and bed linen colors and designs to choose from.
